‘Road Trippin’ Will Continue, With Or Without Richard Jefferson

‘Road Trippin’ Will Continue, With Or Without Richard Jefferson

Getty Image

The Richard Jefferson era in Cleveland has come and gone after the Cavaliers traded Jefferson to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. Ultimately, the Cavaliers needed a roster spot for Dwyane Wade, and unfortunately, Jefferson was the odd man out.

The on-court impact of Jefferson leaving the Cavaliers deserves its own discussion at some point, but at 37-years old, it’s conceivable that the off-court impact Jefferson had on the team was a lot more important. Jefferson’s excellent presence in the Cavs locker room culminated in the creation of the Road Trippin’ podcast featuring Jefferson, teammate Channing Frye, and Fox Sports Ohio reporter Allie Clifton.

Through 50 episodes of Road Trippin’, Jefferson, Frye, and Clifton brought Cavaliers fans closer to an NBA locker room than anything we’ve ever seen before, with everything from in-depth basketball conversations to impromptu guest appearances by random Cavaliers employees. It was equal parts unique and terrific.

Kevin McHale Says Name-Calling Won’t Alter His Opinion Of James Harden

Kevin McHale Says Name-Calling Won’t Alter His Opinion Of James Harden

Getty Image

The Kevin McHale-James Harden beef doesn’t look to be winding down any time soon. On a recent episode of Open Court, the former Rockets coach didn’t pull any punches when discussing Houston ‘s acquisition of Chris Paul, saying quite simply that Harden isn’t a leader and that he’ll benefit from having Paul around to take up the reigns in that department.

Harden, of course, took exception to that assessment, calling McHale “a clown” and blaming the Celtics legend for never nurturing his leadership abilities.

McHale was back on the air with TNT’s Inside the NBA crew on Friday night for the Rockets’ preseason finale against the Spurs when the conversation inevitably circled back to his recent tiff with his former player. To his credit, McHale didn’t try to walk back his previous comments.

Kevin Durant Says Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Be The Best Player Ever

Kevin Durant Says Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Be The Best Player Ever

Getty Image

Kevin Durant is already one of the best players in NBA history, and at the age of 29, there is plenty of room for the Golden State Warriors star to keep building his ultimate legacy. That kind of reputation brings with it quite a bit of weight when Durant discusses the game in an overall sense, and on Friday, he paid an extremely generous compliment to a fellow member of the NBA fraternity.

Within the confines of a Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Durant was asked about some of his favorite players to watch in the league.

While he made sure to mention teammate and two-time MVP Steph Curry (as well as Portland’s CJ McCollum), Durant keyed in on Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Joel Embiid And Hassan Whiteside Are Locked In A Vicious Twitter War

[ad_1]

Joel Embiid And Hassan Whiteside Are Locked In A Vicious Twitter War

Getty Image

The Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat squared off in what turned out to be a not-so-competitive preseason game on Friday evening. While the Sixers ran away with a 24-point win, all eyes were on the matchup at the center position between Philly’s Joel Embiid and Miami’s Hassan Whiteside.

Just days after Embiid lit the NBA world on fire with a 22-point performance in 15 (!) minutes against the Nets, the talented big man scuffled to a 1-for-7 performance in limited time against the Heat. However, Embiid did have success in drawing fouls against Whiteside and that is where things get (very) interesting.

Steph Curry Will Try To Draft All Warriors If He’s An All-Star Captain

[ad_1]

Getty Image

There’s a saying, “to the victor goes the spoils” and for Stephen Curry, if he were to be voted as an All-Star Captain, he’d be spoiling his teammates with the rewards. If we’re honest, that’s what makes the new format so interesting, the ability to be petty and further certain rivalries.

For those unaware, gone are the days of the East vs. West matchup in the NBA All Star Game and the new format is similar to what the NFL does with it’s Pro Bowl. The two players receiving the most votes would be captains of their squads. Those two captains would select from a pool of 22 players — from votes or coaches selections — who would be on their squads for the highlight show that is the NBA All Star Game.

In theory, this is where all of the pettiness from the NBA offseason could spill over. It could create a situation where the captains are able to go after their guys and also teach us where the true star alliances are in the NBA. The pettiness and possibly some latent competitiveness would be off the charts, especially for a glorified exhibition game.

For Steph Curry, who could very well find himself as a captain, his early decisions will be pretty easy, as he says he’ll happily take whatever Warriors are on the board. From there, though, it’ll get much trickier.

LeBron James Spoke In Support Of Josh Gordon’s Substance Abuse Battle

[ad_1]

LeBron James issued some strong words of support for another Cleveland sports star going through a difficult time. James spoke out in support of suspended Browns wideout Josh Gordon, who is getting treatment for substance abuse injuries.

Gordon’s rehab for substance abuse is being documented by James’ company Uninterrupted. And while James said he doesn’t know Gordon very well, he knows how difficult it can be to work through substance abuse issues.

“I have zero relationship with Josh Gordon but I have a lot of knowledge about substance abuse,” James said. ” I’ve had someone in my family that’s had substance abuse and it’s very easy to point the finger at people when you don’t know what they’re going through. And that is a real issue. It’s a real thing and it’s a real mental thing.”

Dwyane Wade Has Isaiah Thomas’ Back When It Comes To Danny Ainge

[ad_1]

Isaiah Thomas knows what it’s like to be traded, having been through it with Sacramento and Phoenix, but when he was dealt this summer to the Cavaliers by the Celtics in the Kyrie Irving trade, he felt very different than in the past. In a recent profile with Sports Illustrated, Thomas insisted it’s all love between he and Boston, with one major exception.

That would be general manager Danny Ainge, the man responsible for unceremoniously shipping Thomas off this summer to land another star in Irving. Whether Ainge made the Celtics better with the trade or not, sending Thomas out of town after everything the point guard had been through on and off the court over the past year irked many in the NBA, including Thomas.

Thomas said he might not ever speak to Danny Ainge again because of how hurt he was. On Wednesday, after the story ran, Ainge responded by saying he understood Thomas being upset but didn’t think Isaiah understood how much he loved him. The concept of loyalty is a silly one in modern sports, but so often the burden of being loyal falls on the players rather than the teams, which can often hide behind the “business” of sport to explain moves to fans.

Kyrie Irving Is Happy To Be In A ‘Real’ Sports City, Not Cleveland

[ad_1]

Kyrie Irving is very happy to be in Boston. After requesting a trade from the Cavaliers earlier this summer, the All-Star point guard landed in about as good a position as he could have hoped when he asked Cleveland to deal him.

The Celtics are a playoff team with two auxiliary stars around him in Gordon Hayward and Al Horford, which means he doesn’t have to start over when it comes to competing. Boston earned the East’s top seed a year ago, and with their new trio on board, the Celtics have their eyes on the Finals and toppling LeBron James and the Cavs for the first time in nearly a decade.

Beyond the on court reasoning for Kyrie being happy, he also seems to genuinely enjoy being in the city of Boston rather than Cleveland. With the Celtics set to open their season back in Cleveland, one would think Irving would probably avoid saying anything inflammatory about the city where he started career, but in his excitement about being in Boston, he just can’t help but compare the two.

Check Out Highlights From Joel Embiid’s Sixers Preseason Debut

[ad_1]

NBA

Joel Embiid is back, y’all. Shortly (suspiciously?) after he signed his five-year, $148 million extensions with the Philadelphia 76ers, Embiid made his 2017-18 NBA debut on Wednesday night in a preseason matchup with the Brooklyn Nets. It wasn’t without suspense, though. An ill-timed shot clock malfunction caused a pretty lengthy tipoff delay, forcing 76ers fans to wait just a little bit longer before watching Embiid’s return to the hardwood.

Embiid drew a foul on his first offensive possession thanks to a Ben Simmons entry pass. He then proceeded to knock down the first bucket for the 76ers on his first shot, an open jumper from the wing.

Rajon Rondo Says He’ll ‘Absolutely’ Be A Coach After He Retires

[ad_1]

Getty Image

For all of his perceived faults, Rajon Rondo has built a reputation throughout his career as one of the savviest basketball minds of his generation. He’s certainly had high-profile clashes with his various coaches over the years, but his leadership skills, basketball IQ, and the respect he’s earned among his teammates is unassailable.

Last season in Chicago after Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade were critical of some of the Bulls players’ effort, Rondo was the first to jump to their defense. Now that he’s reunited with former teammate DeMarcus Cousins in New Orleans, the fiery big man has nothing but praise for the veteran point guard.

In a recent joint interview with Shams Charania of The Vertical, Cousins gushed about having Rondo back in the fold, and when Charania asked whether he might someday transfer those leadership traits to the coaching chair, Rondo didn’t hesitate with his answer.
