A massive bomb attack in a busy area of the Somali capital Mogadishu has killed at least 30 people, police say.

Dozens more were wounded when a lorry packed with explosives detonated near the entrance of a hotel.

Police say two people were killed in a second bomb attack in the Madina district of the city.

It is not clear who staged the attacks. Mogadishu is a regular target for the al-Qaeda linked al-Shabab group, which is battling the government.

There are fears people are trapped under the rubble

After the first blast, police captain Mohamed Hussein told Reuters news agency: “It was a truck bomb. There are casualties but we do not know the exact amount as the scene is still burning.”

Witnesses told the BBC they believed dozens of people were dead.

A BBC Somali reporter at the scene said the Safari Hotel had collapsed, with people thought to be trapped under the rubble.

Mogadishu resident Muhidin Ali told news agency AFP it was “the biggest blast I have ever witnessed, it destroyed the whole area”.

Unsent text accepted as dead man’s will by Australian court

A court in Australia has accepted an unsent, draft text message on a dead man’s mobile phone as an official will.

The 55-year-old man had composed a text message addressed to his brother, in which he gave “all that I have” to his brother and nephew.

The message was found in the drafts folder on the man’s phone after he took his own life last year .

Brisbane Supreme Court ruled that the wording of the text indicated that the man intended it to act as his will.

In the message, the man gave details of how to access his bank account and where he had hidden money in his house.

“Put my ashes in the back garden,” he wrote. “A bit of cash behind TV and a bit in the bank.”

According to ABC News, the man’s wife applied to manage his assets and argued that the text message was not valid as a will because it was never sent.

Typically, for a will to be valid in Queensland, it must be written and signed by two witnesses.

Justice Susan Brown said the wording of the text message, which ended with the words “my will”, showed that the man intended it to act as his will.

“The reference to his house and superannuation and his specification that the applicant was to take her own things indicates he was aware of the nature and extent of his estate, which was relatively small,” she said.

She said the “informal nature” of the message did not stop it representing the man’s intentions, especially as it was “created on or about the time that the deceased was contemplating death, such that he even indicated where he wanted his ashes to be placed”.

In 2006, the law in Queensland was changed to allow less formal types of documents to be considered as a will.

Another unusual will accepted in Queensland includes a DVD marked with “my will”, in 2013.

In the wake of his untimely passing, May’s celebrity colleagues and other members of the comedy community have flocked to social media with heartwarming tributes to their friend. From his larger-than-life personality to unmistakable generosity, stars like Bob Saget, Ken Jeong, Kevin Hart and more are sharing why they’ll never forget Ralphie May.

In 2015, May reflected on life as a stand-up comic and his future in the industry during an interview with Bent Source. “Well, you know, stand-up comedy was never work until I had children,” he shared. “Being a great stand-up means there’s a price to pay in that that I have to pay, too, and that’s that I’m not with my children and my wife. That takes a toll. You miss the things that matter. From pulling teeth to being there in the night for nightmares, snuggles. To sports triumphs, school triumphs. Shows. Things you should be a part of as a parent. Bathing and getting dressed and brushing the teeth of your children and reading stories before bedtime.” “You know, and that’s what it’s really about, man,” Ralphie continued. “That’s something that I miss a lot and I don’t wanna miss it anymore. It’s really hard. So, if I could find something else that would pay as much, or a quarter as much, as what I’m doing now, I’d do it in a heartbeat just so I could sleep in my bed next to my wife and hug and kiss my babies and see them everyday.”

Shelley Berman, comedian-bard of everyday life, dead at 92

[ad_1]

A comedian whose groundbreaking routines in the 1950s and 1960s addressed the annoyances of everyday life, has died. Shelley Berman was 92.

Publicist Glenn Schwartz says Berman died Friday at his home in Bell Canyon, California.

Berman won gold records and appeared on top television shows as a pioneer of a new brand of comedy that could evoke laughter from such matters as air travel discomforts and small children who answer the telephone.

He paved the way for Woody Allen, Bob Newhart, Jerry Seinfeld and other comedians who fashioned their routines around the follies and frustrations of modern living.

Late in his career, he played Nat David, father of Larry David, on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Berman made the first of many appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1959. That year he issued his first album, “Inside Shelley Berman” the first winner of a Grammy for the spoken word.
