Earth’s moon doesn’t have much of an atmosphere today. However, it may have had a more prominent atmosphere 3 billion to 4 billion years ago, when volcanic eruptions spewed giant clouds of gas above the lunar surface, a new study has found.
Today’s moon is covered in dead volcanoes and dark maria, or plains that consist of hardened lava. The lunar atmosphere is so thin it’s not even technically an atmosphere — instead, it’s considered an “exosphere,” with molecules that are gravitationally bound to the moon but are too sparse to behave like a gas.
A new study from scientists at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) in Houston suggests that the moon’s ancient volcanoes produced a temporary atmosphere that lingered for 70 million years before dissipating into space. [How the Moon Evolved: A Photo Timeline]
Samples of volcanic glasses collected by Apollo astronauts in the 1970s revealed that magma beneath the lunar surface billions of years ago “carried gas components, such as carbon monoxide, the ingredients for water, sulfur, and other volatile species,” LPI officials said in a statement.
In the new study, the researchers calculated how much gas rose from the lavas that flowed from the lunar volcanoes. They determined that enough gases accumulated around the moon to form an atmosphere, and that this atmosphere grew faster than it could escape into space.
LPI officials said that the findings may have big implications for future exploration of the moon, because it “quantifies a source of volatiles that may have been trapped from the atmosphere into cold, permanently shadowed regions near the lunar poles and, thus, may provide a source of ice suitable for a sustained lunar exploration program.”
The study was published online Sept. 25 in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Triple H appeared on ESPN Sportscenter on Thursday morning to talk about various WWE topics including the Mae Young Classic on WWE Network. Triple H was also asked about the health of Ric Flair, who Triple H called “one of my best friends.”
Here’s what Triple H had to say about Ric Flair’s health after being hospitalized for over two weeks:
“He’s doing much better. I spoke to him a couple of days ago on the phone and I’ll speak to him again today. I tried yesterday, but we missed eachother. He’s doing much better. To be honest, it’s a miracle. He was in a very bad place and he had some health issues that just all of a sudden, they all just exasterbated themselves and he got into a really bad place. I said it when it happened to him, if anybody can kick out of this and kick out on two and a half, it’ll be Flair. He’s like teflon (laughs). He just keeps on going.
He’s not out of the woods 100 percent yet, but he’s doing much better, so if everybody keeps him in their thoughts still it will be great. He’s gonna be there and I guarantee you’ll him see him strutting down the aisle one more time giving everybody the big ‘WOO’ and doing what he does. He lives, literally, for his fans.”
A firefighter who attempted to save Princess Diana 20 years ago after her fatal car crash in Paris has spoken out on the anniversary of her passing about that fateful night.
The British royal died at age 36 in 1997. Xavier Gourmelon was one of the first responders at the scene.
He told Good Morning Britain Thursday Diana was still alive when he first approached the wreckage.
“Nobody knew it was. Nobody recognized her,” he recalled. “As I approached, there was a blonde person sitting on the floor. She regained consciousness and looked at me and said, ‘Oh my God, what’s happened?’ A bit agitated. I tried to calm her down and tell her we’d looked after her, and she fell into a coma again.”
While many have long believed it was the paparazzi chasing Diana’s speeding car that caused the accident, Gourmelon said there was reportedly no one at the crash site.
“When I arrived, there was no one around the car,” he insisted. “It was completely clear around the car. We took her out of the car, put her on a stretcher, and at that moment the doctor said she was in cardiac arrest. So we gave her CPR and after 20 seconds she regained consciousness and we transferred her to the ambulance.”
While Gourmelon believed Diana would survive, she lost consciousness again. Newsweek reported the medical team at Pitie Salpetriere Hospital worked for two hours trying to save Diana, performing internal and external cardiac massage to get her heart pumping again.
The news publication added her left pulmonary vein sustained a major wound, causing internal bleeding. She was later pronounced dead.
Gourmelon still wonders what might have caused Diana’s car to crash that night.
“For me, yes, it was an accident,” he said. “Now, the cause, the reason for the accident is something else.”
While there have been many conspiracy theories over the years surrounding Diana’s sudden death, her biographer Andrew Morton told Fox News in July the cause of the deadly accident is a simple one.
“Well, I think the paparazzi followed her all of her adult life, so they contributed to her death,” he said. “[But] it wasn’t their fault. It was the fact that she was being driven too fast… by a man who was found with drugs and drink. It’s the banality of her death which I think most people can’t come to terms with.”

As certainly as a J.J. Abrams film will have lens flares and M. Night Shyamalan will utilize a twist ending, a Star Wars film is going to have a lot of wipe cuts. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the editing style has become an expected part of the galaxy far, far away. It is so deeply entrenched in Star Wars lore that it even warranted a good hearted jab in Space Balls.
As superfans cling to every tiny morsel of information about The Last Jedi that they can get their hands on, director Rian Johnson took to Twitter to poll fans to see which film in the franchise had the most wipes. The Phantom Menace had the most (first in wipes, last in our hearts) with a whopping 55, The Empire Strikes Back had 42, A New Hope had 31, and The Force Awakens only had a relatively restrained 14. However, the upcoming Last Jedi is slightly breaking with tradition and only featuring 12.
Sure, this is awfully small potatoes in the world of film trivia, but there is a certain comfort that comes with obsessing over this particular lore. When the world is on fire, it’s heartening to know that at least we have more Star Wars to look forward to.

MADRID (Reuters) – A Belgian policeman told a Catalan colleague in 2016 that the imam believed to be the instigator of last week’s attack in Barcelona was suspicious, but no information was found then to link him to Islamist militancy, a source told Reuters.
Police in the northeast Spanish region of Catalonia are coming under growing criticism over the van attack that killed 13 people. Two others were killed during the driver’s getaway and in a separate attack further down the coast.
Several Spanish media accused Catalan police on Thursday of failing to properly investigate the Moroccan imam, Abdelbaki Es Satty. Meanwhile a wider blame game is being played out between central authorities in Madrid and officials in Catalonia, whose leaders are pushing for independence from Spain.
Spanish High Court judge Fernando Andreu on Thursday released, on certain conditions, another of the four suspects arrested over the attacks, a court order said.
Salh El Karib ran an internet cafe in the northeastern Spanish town of Ripoll where most members of the Islamist cell, who were mostly young men of Moroccan descent, lived.
Andreu on Tuesday ordered two suspects jailed while another was freed with conditions.
The other eight known members of the group were killed by police or died in an explosion.
Andreu met high-ranking security officials on Wednesday to set out a common strategy for the probe, a judicial source said.
The source said the meeting was a first step towards integrating the two Spanish police forces – the Civil Guard and the National Police – in the investigation, which had until now been exclusively managed by the Catalan police.
Andreu was due to take a formal decision on this later on Thursday, the source added.
The tip-off about the imam was made informally between two police officials from Belgium and Catalonia who knew each other, a source in Catalonia’s regional government said.
“The communication between the two policemen was not official. They knew each other because they had met in a police seminar,” the source said, on condition of anonymity.
Police records, however, had turned up nothing on the cleric. “The documents show that we had no information about the imam,” the source said, adding that the only official communication channels of the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, with police in other countries were through Spain’s central government.
The Catalan regional government and Spain’s central government declined to comment.
It remains unclear whether Catalan police made their own attempts to follow up the lead.
The top home affairs official in the Catalan regional government, Joaquim Forn, said on Thursday that Catalan authorities had been unaware of any investigation of the imam or that he could pose a threat, Spanish news agency EFE said.
Es Satty spent around three months in the Belgian town of Vilvoorde, a known centre of Islamist radicalism, between January and March last year.
He later went to Catalonia to be the imam of the small town of Ripoll, where he is suspected of having recruited and radicalised most of the group which carried out last week’s attacks.
Hans Bonte, mayor of Vilvoorde, said last week that Es Satty had been “intensely screened” by Belgian police at the time, and he had told Spanish police by email of his whereabouts.
El Pais newspaper quoted Bonte on Thursday as saying he had received a reply from police in Barcelona on March 8 last year. “They said the imam had no links to radical groups,” he said.
Sources close to the investigation told Reuters earlier this week the regional Catalan force may have missed an opportunity to uncover the plot because of procedural errors and a lack of communication among investigators.
The errors and miscommunication centred around a major blast on Aug. 16, the eve of the attack, at a house where it was later discovered that members of the Islamist group had been making explosives, the sources said. Catalan police say Es Satty and another man died in that blast.
Spain ordered Es Satty’s expulsion from the country after he served a four-year jail term for drug-trafficking but this was annulled by a court in 2015 after Es Satty appealed, court officials have said.
The judge at the time overturned the expulsion order partly because Es Satty had employment roots in Spain, which he said “shows his efforts to integrate in Spanish society”.
There was no information before the court at the time to link Es Satty to Islamist terrorism, the officials said.
Spain’s Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said on Thursday he did not expect the attacks to have any significant short-term impact on tourism, which accounts for about 11 percent of the Spanish economy.

Sure, She Gave Rob Lambo and Ferrari
They Were Leased!!!
8/21/2017 12:18 PM PDT
Blac Chyna was so incensed Rob Kardashian kept the Range Rover she gave him, some eyewitnesses say she tried to steal it … but we’ve learned none of the whips in question were owned by either of them.
We broke the story … Chyna and Rob met at a Century City office building to try and hash out their custody dispute, Rob called the valet to get the Rover but stayed back until Chyna left.
Two witnesses tell us, Chyna went on a rant and tried getting in the Range Rover to drive it away. Her lawyer, Lisa Bloom, told TMZ, her client was pissed because Rob had given her a Lambo and a Ferrari and she gave them back to him, yet she gave him the Range Rover and he kept it. Bloom also says Chyna had some choice words when she saw the Rover but never tried getting in.
We’ve just learned … all three vehicles were LEASED! So, when Chyna gave Rob back the Lambo and Ferrari, she washed her hands of any lease payments. We’re also told the Ranger Rover was leased and Rob is making the payments.
Wow … if they’re fighting over this, good luck settling the custody case.
Cause of Death
His Heart Gave Out
8/21/2017 2:44 PM PDT
Jerry Lewis died from heart failure … TMZ has learned.
According to the Clark County Nevada Coroner, the cause of death was ischemic cardiomyopathy … an effect of coronary artery disease in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body to sustain it. It typically occurs when the blood vessels narrow.
Jerry died at his Las Vegas home Sunday, surrounded by family.
We’re told there will be no autopsy on the body because he was under doctor’s care.
He was 91.
Hype can be a very dangerous thing in the world of sports. This is especially the case when you’re the son or daughter of a prominent athlete and the expectations on you are high solely because of your name. The latest example of this comes in the form of LeBron James Jr., whose hoops highlights are eye-popping, but they’re still the highlights for someone who isn’t even in high school yet.
Still, James the younger looks like he might end up being really, really good. The latest proof of this came from the D-Rich TV Camp in Ohio. Held this past weekend, LeBron Jr. teamed up with Elijah Fisher, another teenager who is setting the hoops world on fire. Fisher is a 6’3 seventh grader who can already dunk. Put them together and this happens.
